Workshop: Teaching in a One-Computer Classroom

Description: There are a number of tools available to WVU faculty for enhancing communication and teaching with (and among) students. This session introduced those tools and provides helpful categories for understanding the capabilities and unique attributes of each tool as related to instructional needs. Creative examples for uses of E-mail, chat, discussion boards/forums, listserv, and instant messaging are addressed in the session.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this training participants should be able to:

  1. Identify technologies within a typical one-computer classroom.
  2. Locate available classrooms equipped with similar technologies.
  3. Translate classroom technologies into pedagogical practices.
  4. Demonstrate an ability to operate technologies within a one-computer classroom.
  5. Distinguish among the WVU support units who provide classroom technology support.

Activities and Session Agenda: Successful completion of the workshop requires completion of all in-class activities.

Activity 01: Overview and review typical instructional technology classroom equipment (10 minutes) (PPT) (MOV).

Activity 02: Demonstrate how to operate the equipment to power it on, switch media sources, and power it off (10 minutes).

Activity 03: Discuss instructional possibilities available within a one-computer classroom as compared with a zero-computer classroom (15 minutes) (PPT) (MOV).

Activity 04: Discuss typical preparations required for teaching in a one-computer classroom (10 minutes).

Activity 05: Discuss classroom technology support and location of classrooms (5 minutes) (PPT) (MOV).

Assessment: Successful completion of the workshop requires completion of all in-class activities.
